Cyclobooze
History
The Cyclobooze was founded in 1984 by the then current landlord "Chic Malcolm". He was inspired by several customers who were well into road cycling and visiting pubs during their New Forest jaunts.
The idea was too get as many cyclists together for a charity ride around, the picturesque Isle of Wight, who would gather sponsorship & carry collection cans to make as much money for the charity "Guide Dogs for the Blind". This would take place sometime during the summer months when the weather was more favourable.
There it was, the Cyclobooze was born & on the first weekend in July 1984, 50 cyclists were set off round the Isle of Wight on the traditional anticlockwise route.
Chic was very nervous about the ride feeling that the mixture of cycling and alcohol may have its problems. Nevertheless, he made sure he was at the Saturday night stop early enough to greet the weary cyclists. The stopping place was "The Vine" public house at St Helens hosted by "John".
Chic was completely overwhelmed when the cyclists started to turn up with cans upon cans of money; it appeared to be coming from everywhere. When Colin Lamb (one of the originators) turned up, Chic commented, "I can't believe where all this money is coming from. You said it would work and it has!".
From there the Cyclobooze has seen 21 continuous years of Charity work which resulted in the purchase & training of over 40 Guide Dogs as well as thousands of pounds to the Wessex Cancer Trust & the Lord Nelson Jubilee Sailing Trust.
